In Rome, if you visited in the first century or two of C.E., you would have seen a city of great contrasts. Almost a million people lived in this country. For wealthy people in Ancient Rome, women shopped for goods, while they were accompanied by their slaves. Proud senators strolled with their bodyguards, while soldiers tramped through the streets.
Foreigners would roam the streets from such faraway places as Britain, Spain, and Egypt. And in the midst of it all were Rome’s slaves- hundreds of thousands of them, many of them captured in war. But, the rich was only a small part of Rome’s population. Most of the city’s people lived in filthy neighborhoods filled with crime and disease. Their children were lucky to live past the age of ten. To prevent the poor from becoming a dangerous mob, Roman emperors, gave away food and provided entertainment like gladiator games and chariot races.
Ancient Rome had many different leader, or as they called the leader, emperors. The first emperors that Ancient Rome has was Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar's adopted son. In 31 B.C.E, after 30 long years at civil war, Augustus defeated Cleopatra. Augustus called himself emperor because he knew that the people would never accept the title of king. Another of the leaders was Nero. He was one of the famous emperors, but he was not a good one. The only reason Nero became famous was because he was insane.
Overtime of him becoming the emperor, he became insane. Nero was murderously insane. Hundreds of people caught his eye, so he killed them. Also, he even ordered some of the Roman Senates to even kill themselves. This even drove the Senate to action. The Senate even tried to arrest Nero. When Nero found out they were coming for him, he decided to commit suicide. Even though there was many more of these emperors, these were a couple of them.
